National Symposium/Career Fair In New Mexico

San Antonio College had the privilege to send six students to the national symposium in New Mexico free of charge to the students (Libna, Sandra, Jackie, Emilio, AJ, and Sebastian). When they came back they shared their experiences with MAES at the October 29th, 2007 meeting and information on internships and scholarships provided at the fair.

"Over the course of the conference each attendee will have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of events.  Several key features relevant to the professional include:

  • Student Workshops – Over 30 student workshops are planned and offered by a variety of corporations, agencies, and academic institutions across a broad spectrum of industries.  Topics include graduate education, workplace dynamics, communication skills, career development, entrepreneurship, and cultural awareness to name a few.
  • Professional Workshops – Several special sessions are scheduled to be taught by a hired instructor.  These workshops, each short courses on relevant focus areas, have been very successful in assisting young professionals seeking to develop their managerial and interpersonal skills.  Past topics have included Crucial Conversations, Understanding Motivation, Communication for the Technical Professional, and Dynamic Negotiations.
  • Scholarships – Last year MAES awarded roughly $75,000 in scholarships to deserving college students enrolled in engineering and science programs.
  • Technical Papers and Research Posters – Students and professionals are invited to submit abstracts and present cutting-edge research in either a paper or poster forum to a panel of judges.

In addition to the developmental opportunities provided through the workshops and related sessions, attendees will also have the opportunity to be inspired by keynote speakers and network with peers at the many social events.  These events, each one a memorable production, addresses key focus areas rooted deep in the mission of MAES.  The mission of MAES is to promote, cultivate, and honor excellence in education and leadership among Latino engineers and scientists."

Stinson Middle School Visits the SAC Physics/Engineering Department

Friday, November 2nd, you may have noticed some younger faces around campus. That's because Stinson Middle school had a feild trip to tour SAC departments. The students in the physics/engineering group, led by Mr.Jerry O'Connor, were able to meet with Rosa Maria Gonzalez for some tips on starting college. From there they travelled to CAC 144 (the MESA study center) where Dr.Dan Dimitriu spoke with them about how to do well in college, and why engineering and physics are so important. The students were then able to have a question and answers period with students in the MESA study center (Emilio, Miguel, Carlo, Esmerelda, and Megan). Following that they walked upstairs to the physics lab. Mr.Trevino had some fairly hands on experiments set up, and Mr.O'Connor was able to teach them about the concepts behind it. As the were walking back to the bus they were talking about how cool everything was, so overall, I'd say, "job well done guys!"

MESA Study Center

Codes to the study center (CAC144) are trickling in. So if you filled out a MESA contract or you'd like to have access to the study center, please see Dr. Dimitriu's secretary, Ms. Korseau, in rm cac238. The study center currently has a engineering graphics tutor available, study groups for: calc II, physics 1570 and engineering statics, and computers are on the way.

Projects

The Project Committee meets half an hour before every MAES meeting. We are currently moving towards a bottle rocket contest, building ornithopters, and a robotics competition in the Spring semester.
